The Marien pharmacy in Vienna’s 6th district is a point of contact for deaf people, where Austria’s first deaf pharmacist provides health information in Austrian sign language. Besides from personal counselling, the pharmacy also offers public information videos on health topics in sign language and health talks in deaf unions in order to strenghten deaf people’s health literacy.

Such a service did not previously exist in Vienna. The health literacy of as many deaf people as possible is strengthened in different ways. With the involvement of the deaf community and in cooperation with various institutions and professions, the bilingual employees of the Marien Apotheke are constantly implementing innovative ideas.
