What is it about?
Dealing with death seems to be particularly difficult when children or young people lose someone to whom they are close. Since 2003, the Rainbow association, which has its head office in Graz, helps children and young people all over Austria to cope with this difficult period. Regardless of their social situation, they are given support based on their needs. The preventative and educational support revolves around four main topics: death, memory, feelings and the future. The children and young people learn to deal consciously with the end of a life. The focus of the care always remains on the child, while the family provides the central framework. Siblings or other family members also receive help and in some cases, groups are helped, for example, when a fellow school pupil dies.
Appreciation of the Jury
In 2009, the jury awarded the project third place “as a result of its conscious and simultaneously natural way of dealing with the end of a life”.
