A former castle courtyard is being renovated and maintained in Rakovice in southern Bohemia by migrants who live or have lived in an urban environment (Prague) and local people. Migrants, parents and children and, above all, socially disadvantaged people and refugees can rest, learn, teach and work in this community centre. In cooperation with the local population, intercultural courses and leisure activities, as well as language classes, psycho-social therapy services and agricultural activities are offered. Since winning the award, the centre’s activities have been expanded to include seasonal and religious celebrations and an annual holiday camp.

The jury noted that the project regards migrants as “subjects rather than objects” and allows them to “provide their resources as designers of their own lives”. The project was awarded a prize of €1000 in 2008.
